Frequently asked questions
What gauge will the tramway be?
The original Glyn Valley Tramway was built to a gauge of 2 foot 4 inches and a quarter, which was highly unusual and the only example of this gauge in Britain. We’ve made the decision to instead lay track to the gauge of 2 foot 3 inches. This will make acquiring rolling stock much easier and allow us to be compatible with both the Talyllyn Railway and the Corris Railway, opening the possibility of visiting engines in the future.
Will you be running steam locomotives on the GVT?
We would love to run steam on the GVT, and that is one of our goals! However, steam locomotives can be expensive to acquire and run, and require additional facilities to provide coal and water. While we do aim to run steam one day, we plan to start out with diesel or battery electric locomotives first.
Where will the Tramway run from and to?
The Tramway will run from Chirk station, under Hand Lane bridge, alongside the standard gauge line until it turns West and heads under Matchbox Bridge. From here it will drop at a gradient of 1 in 60 into the valley until it reaches Pontfaen. At a distance of 1.2 miles, this is where we plan to build a new station in the future.
I’d love to volunteer/donate funds or equipment to the GVT! How can I do this?
Thank you! The best way to do this is to use the Contact Us page on this site to get in touch and let us know how you wish to help. Everything gets us closer to making this project a reality, no matter how small!
